"Anne" 1995 - Collage/mixed media on canvas (5'x 4')
The story of Anne Frank is known throughout the world. The image of
Anne wearing the yellow star is the reality of her life before she was
forced into hiding with her family. With Anne, we have a face that can
be singularly identified as the symbol for all of the millions who died.
"From Whole Cloth" 1995 - Collage/mixed media on canvas (5'x 4')
On a trip to Austria I visited the concentration camp at Matthausen.
Until then, I had never given any thought as to how all of the millions
of yellow stars that Jews were forced to wear had been produced.
I was astonished when I realized that the Germans had manufactured hundreds of thousands of yards of fabric which contained only yellow stars, stamped with the word JUDE, to mark those selected to die.
During that visit I was intensely moved by standing alone in the middle of a small barracks in which hundreds of people, stacked like cordwood, were forced to live and die.
This work is an attempt to show how the Nazis created "whole cloth", whole sole purpose was to destroy the whole cloth of an ancient culture.
